She felt all eyes on her; his whole family. What was she supposed to do? She walked slowly to the bed and kneeled in front of him, looked tenderly into his eyes,kissed his forehead and left. Blinded by tears, she walked out of the room, eyes downcast. She walked down the lonely path better memories flooding through her mind.
"Stop it!Mummy!",Ellie yelled at the top of her lungs.
Her mother came running down the stairs.
"What is it sweetie? Jonathan,what did you do now?"
"He pulled my hair mummy!He did that when I told him not to! I hate him",Ellie screamed.
"I didn't aunty.She pushed me so i tugged on her hair a little thats all",Jon looked at his aunt in earnest.
That was her first vivid memory of him. They were always fighting. She smiled a little reminiscing of all their silly quarrels that usually ended up in him giving her a pebble. That was his strange way of asking for forgiveness. She had three boxes filled with pebbles of various shapes and sizes.
"Hey nerd!".
Ellie refused to turn around. She felt a tug on her hair. She ignored it and walked towards the entrance of grade school. Another tug. She whirled around angrily, her glasses askew,"Leave me alone!"
"Hahaha!"
"Go on, aren't you gonna ask the nerd out,Jon?"
"hahaha, get real dude. Like I would ask her out"
Jon and his stupid pals laughed and jeered at her. Ellie pushed pass them and made her way to class, fuming with anger.
He always came over after to apologise. She always forgave him. She wondered why though. He didn't deserve to be forgiven. But then again, it was just Jon acting macho. She was used to it. She knew he was a sweetheart deep down. If only he wouldn't hang around with those idiots.
"Jon its been 6 years, why don't you stop hanging around with those idiots? You're better than that you know?"
"Hey, they understand me baby. "
"And I don't? You're in high school now Jon. Grow up and leave them be . Why do you even bother?"
He always shook his head and said she did not understand. She warned him again and again that they would be trouble. He brushed off her worries with a kiss. "Don't worry",he used to say.
It was their high school graduation. They were having an awesome time. Dancing and mingling. Then the STUPIDS arrived. "Baby please don't spoil this for us,please",she begged. He kissed her forehead and told her he'd be back in abit. She shook her head in exasperation and went to talk to some of her girlfriends. Next thing she knew, the boys were all drunk. She pulled Jon out, "Jon lets go home sweetie".
"Baby, lets just have a good time tonight ok. Don't spoil it"
"Do what you want Jon. You always do anyways!"
She pushed him aside and walked to her car,got in and left.
She was at home sleeping when the telephone rang. It was his mother," Ellie, Jon had an accident.We're in the hospital now".
She rushed down as fast as she could. All they could tell her was that he was badly injured and would not survive.
As she walked down the path, she picked up pebbles.All the pebbles in the world wouldn't let her forgive herself. Tears streamed down her face as she climbed the hill to Rock Cliff; their hideout. As she reached the top, she screamed, " I'm sorry!I'm so sorry!" She flung herself from the cliffs. Into the pebbles and rocks he loved so much.
Jon sat at her grave telling her about his day at work. He never forgot her. He couldn't. No matter how hard he tried. He just wished it could have ended differently. MotherNatureLovesPink.9:05 AM
